TENS uses low-voltage electrical current delivered through electrode pads on the skin. Many people use it to help support comfort and relaxation. Two common theories are that the current can (1) influence how pain signals travel to the brain (changing perception) and (2) encourage the release of your body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins.

Important safety note: Do not use TENS if you are pregnant or if you have an implantable device (like a pacemaker), cancer, epilepsy, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), bleeding disorders, or heart disease. Avoid placing pads on/near infected tissue, damaged skin, varicose veins, eyes, mouth, the front/side of the neck, head, genitals, numb areas, or areas that recently received radiation therapy. Possible side effects can include skin irritation or discomfort, and rare burns. If you have questions, check with your healthcare provider.
